Behind the Artist
Hi! My name is Samantha Woods. I am an undergraduate Illustrator from Kansas currently studying art and design at SCAD! With my art, I strive to evoke a mood through dynamic composition, lighting, texture, and color. I use a wide range of mediums anywhere from acrylic paint, ink, oil pastel, graphite, colored pencil, to digital media. My main digital programs are Procreate, Photoshop, and Illustrator.
Nature, humans, and connection are what inspires me to create art. Humans and the connections we share with memories, color, and one another is what I am learning to convey through my art.
When I am creating an illustration on a large scale, I start with ideation. I sift through what I want the piece to feel like both visually through textures and emotions. I focus on quickly getting my ideas down through multiple different compositions in the first pass. When I have several solid compositions, I render them to black and white value studies then color studies as I narrow it down to two or three compositions. During this stage I play with lighting and colors, finding the best harmony with the flare needed for that specific illustration. Once I have the final, I play with the texture, adding depth and last touches.
